Planning Holidays in Your First Year of Work in New Zealand

One of the biggest drawcards of living in New Zealand is the abundance of incredible places to explore. But what happens if you can’t take a holiday during your first year of work?

In New Zealand, most employment contracts include the clause: “After twelve months’ continuous employment, you are entitled to X weeks of annual leave each year.”

Does that mean you’re unable to take a break before completing a full year of work?

The short answer is: it depends on your employer.

Understanding Annual Leave in NZ

New Zealand employment law states that employers are not obligated to grant annual leave requests until after an employee has completed 12 months of continuous service. However, many employers—particularly in healthcare—understand the importance of holidays and will allow you to take leave as it accrues. That said, it’s not guaranteed.

If you’ve got a summer break or a family trip planned within your first year of work, your employer has the right to decline your request if this wasn’t discussed and agreed upon before you started the role.

Why it’s important to plan ahead

Healthcare professionals work in demanding environments and taking time off is crucial for maintaining your wellbeing. Reasonable employers recognize this and are often open to accommodating leave requests, but communication is key.

If you’re starting a new job and know you’ll want time off before hitting the 12-month mark, make sure you raise this during contract negotiations. That way there’s no uncertainty or disappointment later on.

How Good Together can help

When we’re negotiating a contract on your behalf, Good Together can clarify the terms and address any concerns about annual leave. If you’re hoping to take a holiday before completing your first year, we can advocate for you by discussing options with your new employer.

For example, we might propose a fair arrangement where you’re allowed to take a week’s leave for every quarter worked. Once agreed upon, this can be included in your contract, giving you the confidence to start your new role knowing your travel plans—or spontaneous adventures—are sorted.

Start your new job with confidence

At Good Together, we understand the importance of balancing work with life’s adventures. Whether it’s hiking through Tongariro National Park, relaxing on the beaches of the Coromandel, or exploring the stunning South Island, we’re here to ensure your work arrangements allow you to enjoy the best of what New Zealand has to offer.
