Help open a new kind of general practice

Something new is happening in the Hutt Valley.

A long-established Pacific health service is opening its own general practice, and they are looking for an experienced GP to help bring it to life.

Although the general practice is new, the service behind it certainly isn’t. You’ll join a highly experienced, multidisciplinary team that has spent more than 25 years caring for Pacific families across the Hutt Valley.

This is initially a locum opportunity from late October 2026 through to January 2027, with the potential to become something more permanent if the fit is right.

The Practice and the Team
The practice is being established within a large, nurse-led Pacific health service with more than 40 staff.

The clinical team includes 16 registered nurses, an experienced nurse practitioner, nurse prescribers and nurses progressing towards nurse practitioner status. You’ll also work alongside social workers, mental health and addiction counsellors, health coaches, health promoters, physiotherapists and a capable administration team.

Patients will be triaged and prepared before seeing you, with the nursing team able to undertake observations, follow-up care and wider wraparound support. This means you can focus on the work that most needs your expertise and practise at the top of your scope.

While you may initially be the sole GP onsite, you will be surrounded by people who know their patients, their families and their community exceptionally well.

An opportunity to make your mark
The team already provides extensive clinical, home-based and community care. Establishing a general practice is the natural next step, and the GP is the final piece needed to bring the model together.

You’ll have the opportunity to help shape the early days of the practice, working with a team that is collaborative, forward-thinking and open to doing things differently.

There is also a longer-term vision to appoint a permanent Principal GP and develop the service into a teaching practice and Pacific learning hub for future GP registrars.

It is meaningful work, but you’ll also find plenty of warmth, laughter and connection. Successes are celebrated, people look after one another and, in their own words, food is their love language.

About you
You’ll be an experienced GP who is comfortable working with a high degree of clinical independence while contributing to a genuinely multidisciplinary model of care.

You will have:

• Current full registration and an APC with the Medical Council of New Zealand
• RNZCGP Fellowship
• Confidence working independently as the first GP within a new practice
• Experience with, or a strong commitment to, caring for high-needs communities
• Cultural humility and an understanding of the importance of family, community and connection in Pacific health
• A collaborative, flexible and curious approach
• An interest in finding practical solutions to complex and meaningful clinical work

A personal connection with Pacific communities would be warmly welcomed. More important is your cultural understanding, your values and your commitment to the people the service supports.

Location
The Hutt Valley offers easy access to Wellington alongside a more relaxed, community-focused way of life.

Beaches, river trails, bush walks, mountain biking and regional parks are all nearby, with reliable public transport into the city. At the end of the day, you could be walking beside the Hutt River, exploring the local food scene or heading to the coast for a swim.
